Be Fruitful and Multiply

Exodus 1

Whether in the land of freedom or slavery, the LORD makes it possible for man to obey the original command of GOD to be fruitful and multiply.

GOD never issues a command without giving the subsequent or necessary conditions to obey it. Even in the midst of adversity, the commands of GOD can be fulfilled.

  1. When God commanded Adam and Eve and later Noah and his sons to be fruitful and multiply, in both cases there were less than a dozen people on the surface of the entire earth. Today our population is 7,000,000,000; give or take a few hundred thousand who die of famine / hunger / poverty / war / preventable diseases / etc. At this rate, we’ll soon be able to add overpopulation to the list. Do you think that the command to be fruitful and multiply still applies or has it been fulfilled?

    1. Hi Jamie,

Thanks for your comment. I’ve been thinking about it a lot today. Below is what I’ve concluded so far.

This particular commandment to be fruitful and multiply seems to have been written directly on the table of man’s heart. The desire is so strong to reproduce after our own kind that someone, somewhere will be anguishing in childbirth and rejoicing afterward that a child has been brought into the world. Even when it seems there is no room for another child, a space will somehow appear.

We will still find barren women, because of the desire to be fruitful and multiply, seeking whatever available means to become pregnant. There will still be a proud dad either in the waiting room or the operating room waiting for his child to be born, while wondering how he will be able to provide for him/her. And that’s natural birth.

On a spiritual note, we find ministers travelling all over the world with the desire to be fruitful and multiply, birthing spiritual sons and daughters.

And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20) In effect, He was saying to be fruitful and multiply.

So yes, I do believe the commandment still applies; and that the LORD will provide the subsequent or necessary conditions to obey, even when it means moving man from his comfort zone to a land that he will show him.

      Thanks again.

      Joy! Janice

      1. Interesting – but I’m not so sure. Hundreds of commandments exist within the pages of the Bible – some of which nobody views as applicable to today. The only ones that most people can agree on are the ten commandments or the teachings of Jesus. Everything else seems optional.
Some though, believe that ‘being fruitful and multiplying’ and Psalm 127:3-5 are a central aspect of Quiver-full ideology, the Dugger family famously exemplified it by having 19 children. Their friends, the Bates family that they would sometimes feature on their shows also has 19 children. In this environment, daughters are raised to be ideological clones whose only purpose is to marry and have as many children as possible. It’s a destructive ideology because young women are not permitted to have dreams outside of those limits as to do so would be to turn their backs on God’s highest calling for women.
